AN AI POWERED DATA COLLECTION MOBILE APP

RoadSense focuses on assisting local governments with road quality management. RoadSense’s technology is derived of an AI-driven process that uses data collected by smartphone cameras to determine which roads need maintenance.

Overview

The goal of this project was to enhance the UI based on the existing application. Throughout this project, I identified capabilities within the existing application that improved the visual information displayed. Below are several mockups that depict the improvements made to the application.

Due to the nature of this redesign, I designed an app that visually aligned with the client's existing brand language by familiarizing myself with the client’s existing assets and documents. Additionally, I documented their legacy application to understand the user flow, scale, and target areas of improvement.

The sections below include the updates I made to the existing application.

Home

The home screen contained two main features: Drive and Upload.

The original application displayed the storage remaining via “GB Remaining”. I advocated to display “capture time remaining” for easier user comprehension.  

Updating the formatting of the “save location” allows for better clarity and hierarchy of information.

Visually separating the “Drive” and “Upload” buttons using card containers helps to distinguish the different functions.

The upload section is where the user uploads the data and footage previously captured.

Originally, the data upload would begin automatically when entering the data upload screen. To make this more user friendly I  included a “Start upload button”, giving the user more control over their actions. 

The upload screen now indicates time remaining, amount of footage uploaded, and percentage uploaded after initiating the upload. This better informs the user of the upload status and progress.

Drive

The drive feature is where the user captures road conditions via camera recording that are later uploaded.

I chose to display a record time because most dashcam users are familiar with this feature.

The GPC connection and time remaining display were modernized as well.

The home screen included several instances that needed to be accounted for including: Home, upload up-to-date, low memory, and out of memory.

I designed the capture interfaces in a way that optimized the space available and displayed information to the user in a way that wa informative yet would prohibit distractions.

Login & Create Account

In the existing application, there was no differentiation between the login and create account screens. For the updated UI I wanted to ensure that there was a distinction to avoid user confusion. I also highlighted the areas of the client’s branding that I identified during the discovery phase of the project.
